CHARISSA MENEFEE

GEESE BITE

Geese bite, my little son discovers
when he ventures too near,

drawn

by white waddlers seeking afternoon
breezes and bread crumbs,

innocent

to signs of irritation—ruffled feathers,
tweaked necks, bad

humour—

his hands outstretched in friendship,
only to cry

foul

when a beak takes a bite out of
his knee, teaching him not to trust

beauty.
