LAURA MADELINE WISEMAN

EXTENDED TERRITORIES

Everyone else can keep the Midwest, the Great Plains, headwinds
that come from all directions and spites the precise fields
of soybean and corn as they flit coffee shop to winery,
notebook and cell phone in hand ready to share it all.

We still get the West for us, our bicycles and car, buttes for days,
a river glimmering white and blue as companions, road
map, and fuel, that’s our future Wi-Fi connection, not a deadline yet
ticking amid trees that whisper a music we’ve begun to understand.

Maybe when it’s all over we’ll swap reports—us of the Cascades
with one of their cornhusker dreams. After this route winds
through blue sky to ocean, there will be another signal to hear—
they with the call of a thrush, us with the unmistakable song of a lark.
